Ladies Sanitary Products Should Be Disposed Of Properly

How should we dispose of sani-care items properly? Menstrual pads that are organic/ biodegradable/ compostable — do you know about them? Do sanitary napkins compost 100%? What are the options for recycling disposable products? Can the government manage the waste of ladies sanitary products in any way?

In our current society, sanitary napkins are disposed of in various ways.

It is essential to examine the means of disposing of eco-friendly organic feminine pads in detail. Based on where someone lives, one can observe a specific pattern of behavior. As a result, women in urban areas place sanitary napkins into dustbins, which eventually land in landfills. In rural areas, however, women wash their napkins and bury them. A significant difference in how wasted products are disposed of at home versus at work/school equally exists. Since public washrooms lack proper infrastructure, sanitary napkins flush down the drain and end up in corners or open areas. It is rare for women to burn feminine napkins. To prevent people from disposing of sanitary pads incorrectly and harmfully, we should provide them with instructions.

Government guidelines for disposing of cotton pads for women in India

Both the government and the CPCB have established guidelines for disposing of sanitary waste. You can dispose of sanitary napkins according to the following steps:

1. It would be ideal in rural areas if sanitary napkins were made without SAP, at a low cost, in rural areas.

2. Installation of a municipal or rural electric incinerator

3. Using a high-temperature incinerator to burn biological waste in combination with another bio-waste.

4. Compostable materials for deep burial in the countryside

5. Utilize only compostable materials when composting – Site composting

6. Those in rural areas are allowed to burn waste in pits.

7. Incineration and landfill disposal are both permitted under the guidelines. Although both methods are simple to implement, they require thorough implementation on all levels. There is a need for more access to infrastructure and facilities in rural areas.

Although these methods sound ideal, they also have their downsides. According to the general rule, incineration emissions reach dangerously high levels, while land filling poses high levels of pollution, and plastics take several years to degrade. To handle our sanitary napkin waste, we should either recycle or use eco-friendly Cotton Sanitary Pads.

Is there a sanitary napkin disposal method that is effective?

Since eco-friendly periods product are not widely available across India, there are alternative processes such as recycling and composting. But every person can make a difference in a few ways.

It is equivalent to burning sanitary napkins in a hospital to incinerate sanitary napkins in a city. To find an incineration unit nearby, one needs to search and locate it. In this method, sanitary waste is separated at the individual level, collected at the group level, and burned at the group level.
It is advisable to wrap the used pad in a disposable wrapper provided by most pad manufacturers before throwing it in a dustbin with other garbage. Keeping waste pickers safe and hygienic is essential.
For rural regions without a centralized waste-collection system, CPCB deems incineration to be the best option. There is various low-cost incineration methods available, such as manual incineration and electric incineration.

Conclusion

Keeping this in mind, we will not solve the problem but only learn new ways to deal with it better. The future will offer plenty of opportunities for innovation. I believe that menstrual pads made from organic materials should be encouraged in India. To make purchases more ethical and environmentally friendly, manufacturers have misled consumers by claiming that their products are eco-friendly sanitary products or by confusing them with terms they don’t understand.
